Groep 1850

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Groep 1850, also called Group 1850, was a Dutch psychedelic rock band founded in 1964 in The Hague. The group was first called Klits and in 1966 was renamed Groep 1850, when the first single, Misty Night and Look Around, appeared on the small label Yep. Few copies were pressed, but the record made them known as one of the most original Dutch bands, alongside The Outsiders and Q65. The group then signed with Philips.

Music and breakthrough

On Philips came more singles in a strongly psychedelic style, including I Know, Mother No-Head, which reached number twenty-four in the Netherlands in 1967, Zero and We Love Life. In 1968 and 1969 the albums Agemo's Trip to Mother Earth and Paradise Now appeared. Shortly afterwards the band split up, but it was active now and then in the 1970s. Releases included the album Polyandri and, in 1971, the single Fire with Have You Ever Heard? on Polydor.

Influence

Outside the Netherlands the group never had success, but today it is regarded as one of the most innovative acid rock bands of its time. S.I.X., Sjardin's Terrible Surprise and Orange Upstairs later emerged from the same milieu. Groep 1850 shows that the psychedelia of the 1960s had an adventurous side of its own in the Netherlands too.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Mother No-Head (1967) and notice the guitars and the vocals, which unfold like a dreamlike, slightly menacing trip. Hear how far this sounds from the ordinary hit parade of the time.
