Gazebo

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Gazebo is the stage name of Paul Mazzolini, an Italian singer, songwriter and producer, born on 18 February 1960 in Beirut. His father worked there as a diplomat at the Italian embassy, and his mother was American. The family later lived in Jordan, Denmark and France. Mazzolini learned to speak Danish in Denmark and worked as a guitarist in London. In 1983 he graduated in French literature. He chose his name after the garden pavilion of that name, because he thought it sounded catchy.

Music and breakthrough

Gazebo became known in the 1980s with Italo disco. His debut single Masterpiece appeared in 1982 and reached number two in Italy. In 1983 came I Like Chopin, which reached number 1 in Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and, in total, in more than fifteen countries. That same year Lunatic made the top ten in several European, Asian and Latin American countries. His work from that period was produced by Pierluigi Giombini, with whom he also wrote Dolce Vita for the singer Ryan Paris. His albums include Gazebo from 1983, Telephone Mama from 1984, Univision from 1987 and The Rainbow Tales from 1988.

Influence

In 1997 he started his own label, Softworks. He continues to perform, works on new albums and produces for other artists. In 2014 he appeared in the comedy Sexy Shop. Gazebo stands for the electronic, melodic dance pop of Italy in the early 1980s, which was played all over Europe.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I Like Chopin and notice the electronic sounds and the memorable melodic line. Try to hear how the track puts a classical composer into a disco song.
