Extince

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Extince, real name Peter Kops, was born in 1967 in Oosterhout, in the province of North Brabant. He is also known as De Exter. In the 1980s he moved to Amsterdam and rapped in English. The Milkshake Rap (1987) became a minor hit, but was withdrawn from sale after a claim from McDonald's over a sample. In 1994, at the request of Def P of the Osdorp Posse, he recorded the Dutch-language Turbotaal. After that he rapped only in Dutch.

Music and breakthrough

Spraakwater (1995), produced by DJ Knowhow, reached number eight in the Top 40. It is regarded as the first Dutch-language hip hop hit in the top 10. The intro opens with the familiar jingle for the number 1 of the Top 40 and a quotation from Meneer de Uil (Mr Owl) in De Fabeltjeskrant. Then comes a relaxed funk beat over which Extince raps smoothly and with a Brabant accent. Not everyone was pleased. Def P found it too commercial and replied with Braakwater, to which Extince responded with Kaal of Kammen. Spraakwater became the first single from his Dutch-language debut album Binnenlandse Funk (1998).

Influence

After Vitamine E (2001) came a feud on record with Brainpower. Extince kept making albums, from Toch? (2007) to Kermis (2019), and in 2020 released Spraakwater 25. In 2005 he received a Gouden Greep for his entire career and in 2018 an Edison Oeuvreprijs. What Doe Maar did with ska around 1980, Extince did with hip hop: he turned a foreign style into a hit in his own language, and so paved the way for later Dutch-language rappers.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the start of Spraakwater: first you hear the jingle with which the Top 40 announces its number 1, then Meneer de Uil from De Fabeltjeskrant. Only then does the funk beat kick in, and you can hear how Extince makes long Dutch words rhyme.
