Dreams Come True

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dreams Come True is a Japanese pop group founded in 1988 by the singer Miwa Yoshida, bassist Masato Nakamura and keyboardist Takahiro Nishikawa. In Japan the band is known simply as DCT or Dorikamu. Their first album, Dreams Come True, was released in 1989 and sold more than a million copies in Japan. The fifth album, The Swinging Star from 1992, was the first Japanese album to sell more than three million copies.

Music and breakthrough

Nakamura also composed the music for the Sega Mega Drive games Sonic the Hedgehog from 1991 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from 1992. For the second game their song Sweet Sweet Sweet was used as the ending theme. In 1993 they recorded Winter Song for the Japanese version of the film Sleepless in Seattle. Yoshida appeared on the cover of Time in 1996. In 1997 they signed to Virgin Music America in order to break into the United States, but their English-language album Sing or Die from 1998 flopped. Nishikawa left the group in 2002. Later they wrote songs for Disney, including the Japanese theme song for Inside Out.

Influence

The group plays cheerful, bright pop with a striking, powerful singing voice, melodic bass lines and plenty of keyboards. The band is important above all as an example of the enormous home-market success of J-pop in the 1990s, independent of the Western charts.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sweet Sweet Sweet and notice Masato Nakamura's playful bass line and Miwa Yoshida's bright voice. Can you hear how the song stays cheerful, even in the chorus?
