Dorian Electra

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dorian Electra was born in 1992 in Houston, Texas, into a Jewish family. Their father was known in the city as the Rockstar Realtor, and their mother is an artist and jewellery designer. At secondary school Electra founded a philosophy club, and from 2010 to 2014 studied at Shimer College in Chicago, a school where the great books are read. Electra is genderfluid and uses the pronoun they.

Music and breakthrough

In 2010 Electra attracted attention with the music video I'm in Love with Friedrich Hayek, a eulogy to the philosophy of the Austrian economist. Videos such as Roll with the Flow and We Got it 4 Cheap followed, and in 2014 What Mary Didn't Know, based on a philosophical thought experiment. In 2015 came Forever Young: A Love Song to Ray Kurzweil. From 2016 Electra made a series for Refinery29 on the history of feminism and queer culture, with titles such as 2000 Years of Drag. In 2017 the single Jackpot was released and Electra took part in Femmebot by Charli XCX. The debut album Flamboyant came out in 2019, followed by My Agenda in 2020 and Fanfare in 2023.

Influence

Electra is known for an idiosyncratic style, a queer aesthetic and experimental pop. Music, fashion and philosophy merge into one another, which fits the hyperpop and internet culture of the 2010s. They turn ideas from science and history into danceable pop music with a wink.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Flamboyant and notice the electronic sounds, the thick bass and the playful, exaggerated way of singing. What do the lyrics tell you about how Electra looks at masculinity and style?
