DJ Pierre

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

DJ Pierre, born Nathaniel Pierre Jones, is an American DJ and house DJ from Chicago. Together with his friends Spanky, the technical producer, and Herb J, the keyboard player, he formed the group Phuture in the late 1980s. With it arose a sound that became known as acid house: the squealing, squelching sound that came about through experiments with a Roland machine. Spanky and Pierre visited the club Muzic Box of the Chicago DJ Ron Hardy.

Music and breakthrough

The first acid house track the group recorded was Acid Tracks, renamed by Ron Hardy from the original In Your Mind. It lasted more than eleven minutes and had a slow-burning, bass-heavy and deep sound. DJ Pierre afterwards recorded many of the first acid house tracks for Trax Records, under names such as Phuture, Phuture Pfantasy Club and Pierre's Pfantasy Club, together with Felix Da Housecat. Titles included Your Only Friend, The Creator, Got the Bug and Slam. Your Only Friend is about his drug addiction at the time. Later came DJ Pierre's Nervous Tracks in 2007 and Wild Pitch: The Story in 2017, among others.

Influence

DJ Pierre is thus regarded as one of the makers of acid house, a style that from Chicago changed the dance music of the 1980s and 1990s.
