Digable Planets
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Digable Planets is an American hip hop trio, formed in 1987, with the rappers Ishmael Butler, known as Butterfly, Mariana Vieira, known as Ladybug Mecca, and Craig Irving, known as Doodlebug. Butler, originally from Seattle, met Irving in Philadelphia in the late 1980s. In 1989 Butler began working with Irving and Vieira. In 1992 the group signed to Pendulum Records and the whole trio moved to Brooklyn.
Music and breakthrough
The debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) appeared in 1993 and was certified gold by the RIAA. The second album, Blowout Comb from 1994, was according to critics a sharp break from the first: darker, less focused on hooks and more openly political, with references to the Black Panthers and communist symbolism. That same year the group took part in the compilation Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, an album in aid of the fight against AIDS in the African American community. After that the group broke up.
Influence
Digable Planets is counted among jazz rap and alternative hip hop, two directions that in the early 1990s brought hip hop and jazz closer together.
