Dashboard Confessional
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Dashboard Confessional is an American rock band from Boca Raton, Florida, formed in 1999 and led by singer Chris Carrabba. The name comes from the song The Sharp Hint of New Tears on the debut album The Swiss Army Romance. That album appeared in 2000 and began as a solo project of Carrabba's while he was still playing in the band Further Seems Forever. He left that group before their debut was finished, in order to make his second solo album, The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most, and then the EP So Impossible.
Music and breakthrough
By 2002 three other musicians had joined him. After the success of the second album, Carrabba was invited to perform on MTV Unplugged. The live album that came out of it was, for many of the songs, the first time they had been recorded with a full band. In 2002 the video for Screaming Infidelities won the MTV2 Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2003 came A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar, which reached number two on the American chart and became the commercially most successful album.
Influence
In 2004 the band recorded Vindicated for the film Spider-Man 2. Dusk and Summer followed, recorded in 2006 with the producer Daniel Lanois. The Shade of Poison Trees from 2007 returned to the acoustic atmosphere of the first records. The sixth album was called Alter the Ending, from 2009. Later came Covered in the Flood in 2011 and Crooked Shadows in 2018. It remained a band built around one singer and writer, with Carrabba as its constant centre.
