Claire Pichet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Claire Pichet is a French singer and musician who performs solo. She is best known for the song Summer 78, which she sang for the soundtrack of the 2003 film Good Bye Lenin! She worked with Yann Tiersen, the French multi-instrumentalist and composer, on the song Rue des cascades from 1996. That collaboration brought her into the world of French film music and small-scale chanson.

Music and breakthrough

Under her own name the albums Rue des cascades in 1996, Le Phare in 1998, Black Session and Tout est calme in 1999 and C'était ici in 2002 were released, among others. She sings in French and also took part in the soundtrack of the film The Dreamlife of Angels.

Influence

Little is known about her life, and for that reason her place in pop history remains modest. Her importance lies mainly in the work around Tiersen and in the way Summer 78 reached a large audience outside France through Good Bye Lenin!

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Summer 78 and notice the soft singing and the restrained accompaniment. Try to hear how a simple melody in a film can evoke a feeling of nostalgia.
