Annie Palmen
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Annie Palmen, in Dutch usually called Anny Palmen, was a Dutch singer. She was born on 19 August 1926 in IJmuiden, as Anna Maria Palmen. She began her career with dance orchestras around Haarlem and then sang for various radio stations. Her first hit was Ik zal je nooit meer vergeten in 1958. In 1960 she took part in the Dutch selection for the Eurovision Song Contest with Wat een geluk, but lost in a head-to-head to Rudi Carrell.
Music and breakthrough
In 1963 she took part again, and this time she won. The song Geen ander went to the song contest in London, but the lyrics were completely rewritten, and so it became Een speeldoos. In 1967 she became a regular singer with the orchestra De Boertjes van Buuten in the monthly KRO television programme Mik, in which she played the role of Drika. It was a success. Records appeared such as Hoe zou het met m'n slapie gaan in 1968 and 20 super boerenhits in 1973.
Influence
After the end of Mik in 1972 Palmen disappeared from view. She died on 15 January 2000 in Beverwijk, aged 73. Her work shows how light music in the Netherlands in the 1960s consisted of a mixture of levenslied, schlager and television folklore.
