Amália Rodrigues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Amália Rodrigues sold fruit in the port of Lisbon as a girl and sang fado professionally for the first time in 1939. Through films and performances, including at the Olympia in Paris, she brought fado to the whole world. From the 1960s she worked with the composer Alain Oulman, who set poems to music. In 2001 she became the first woman to be interred in Portugal's National Pantheon.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Barco Negro: the Portuguese guitar, with its clear, shimmering sound, plays between the phrases, and Amália's voice deliberately breaks on the high notes.
