Fado
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Fado arose in the first half of the nineteenth century in the poor harbour districts of Lisbon, such as Mouraria and Alfama. The word means fate. A singer, the fadista, sings of loss and longing, in Portuguese saudade, accompanied by a twelve-string Portuguese guitar and an ordinary guitar. Maria Severa became the first famous fadista around 1840. Amália Rodrigues made fado world-famous from the 1940s onwards. Since 2011 fado has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Barco Negro for the way the Portuguese guitar plays around the voice with clear, shimmering notes, and for the way Amália Rodrigues lets the long notes swell.
