Rita Reys uit Rotterdam zong na de oorlog in het orkest van drummer Wessel Ilcken, met wie ze trouwde. In 1956 nam ze in New York voor Columbia The Cool Voice of Rita Reys op, met onder anderen de Jazz Messengers van Art Blakey. Dat was voor een Europese jazzzangeres uitzonderlijk. Ze werd 'Europe's First Lady of Jazz' genoemd. Na de dood van Ilcken trouwde ze met pianist Pim Jacobs, met wie ze tientallen jaren samenwerkte, ook op televisie. Ze nam veel Braziliaanse liedjes en jazzstandards op. Ze stierf in 2013 in Breukelen.
