Het National Philharmonic Orchestra was een Brits orkest dat uitsluitend voor opnames bestond. Charles Gerhardt, producer en dirigent bij RCA Records, richtte het op met orkestleider en contractant Sidney Sax. Aanleiding was onder meer een groot opnameproject voor Reader's Digest. Het orkest begon in 1964 onder wisselende namen, zoals RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra en London Promenade, dat bijna helemaal uit leden van het London Philharmonic Orchestra bestond. In 1971 werd het als National Philharmonic Orchestra geregistreerd.

Muziek en doorbraak

Gerhardt en Sax haalden musici uit de grote Londense pool. In de violen zaten regelmatig concertmeesters van alle grote Londense orkesten. Eerst nam het orkest alleen op voor RCA, vanaf 1974 ook voor Decca, en vanaf 1975 voor Columbia. Veel dirigenten werkten met het orkest, onder wie Leopold Stokowski, Riccardo Chailly, Richard Bonynge, Michael Kamen en Loris Tjeknavorian. Bonynge nam alle drie de ballets van Tsjaikovski op voor Decca, en Kamen nam de orkestpartijen op van Eric Clapton uit de concerten 24 Nights in de Royal Albert Hall.

Invloed

Het bekendst is de serie Classic Film Scores, die Gerhardt met producer George Korngold maakte voor RCA, met titels als Casablanca: Classic Film Scores for Humphrey Bogart, The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann en Psycho. Voor veel luisteraars zijn dit de eerste kennismaking met filmmuziek op plaat, met een rijk orkestgeluid in stereo. Zo bracht het orkest klassieke filmmuziek naar een groot publiek, buiten de bioscoop.
