Leopold Stokowski

Leopold Stokowski was een Britse dirigent, geboren in 1882 in Londen, en een van de grote namen van het orkestleven in het begin en het midden van de twintigste eeuw. Hij studeerde vanaf zijn dertiende aan het Royal College of Music en werkte als organist, eerst in Londen en vanaf 1905 in een kerk in New York. In 1909 werd hij dirigent in Cincinnati, waar hij populaire concerten invoerde en werk van levende componisten programmeerde. In 1912 volgde de aanstelling bij het Philadelphia Orchestra, de plek waar hij het meest mee verbonden is. Later leidde hij ook onder meer het NBC Symphony Orchestra, het New York Philharmonic en het Houston Symphony Orchestra, en richtte hij het All-American Youth Orchestra en het American Symphony Orchestra op.

Muziek en doorbraak

Stokowski dirigeerde zonder baton en haalde uit elk orkest een eigen, herkenbare klank. Hij was een showman die experimenteerde met de verlichting van de concertzaal. Hij bewerkte ook partituren, vooral van Johann Sebastian Bach, wat critici soms te vrij vonden. Hij gaf veel première-uitvoeringen, speelde als enige alle orkestwerken van Arnold Schönberg tijdens diens leven en bracht in Amerika Boris Godunov in 1929 en Wozzeck in 1931. Zijn platen bevatten onder meer Peter and the Wolf uit 1941 en Carmina Burana uit 1959.

Invloed

Voor popluisteraars is hij vooral bekend door Disneys Fantasia, waarvoor hij de muziek dirigeerde en waarin hij zelf in beeld kwam. Daarmee bracht hij klassieke muziek naar de bioscoop en een nieuw publiek. Hij gaf zijn laatste openbare optreden in 1975 en overleed in 1977.
