Mal Waldron

Mal Waldron was een Amerikaanse jazzpianist, componist en arrangeur, in 1925 geboren in New York als zoon van West-Indische immigranten. Hij kreeg van zijn zevende tot zijn zestiende klassieke pianoles, speelde daarna saxofoon in lokale bands en koos na zijn legertijd en een studie aan Queens College definitief voor de piano. Charlie Parker had hem het idee gegeven dat zijn eigen plek niet achter de saxofoon lag. Vanaf 1950 speelde hij professioneel in New York.

Muziek en doorbraak

In de jaren vijftig was hij pianist van het label Prestige en speelde hij op tientallen platen, onder meer in groepen van Charles Mingus, Jackie McLean, John Coltrane en Eric Dolphy. Voor Coltrane schreef hij Soul Eyes, zijn bekendste lied. Van april 1957 tot haar dood in juli 1959 was hij vaste begeleider van Billie Holiday. Eigen albums uit die jaren zijn Mal-1, Mal/2, Mal/3 Sounds en The Blues Minus You. In 1963 raakte hij door een overdosis zijn muzikale vaardigheid kwijt. Hij leerde langzaam opnieuw spelen, verliet midden jaren zestig de Verenigde Staten en vestigde zich in Europa.

Invloed

Zijn wortels lagen in hardbop en postbop, maar hij schoof op naar vrije jazz. Opvallend zijn zijn wrange akkoorden en het herhalen van noten en motieven. Hij nam meer dan honderd albums onder eigen naam op en schreef voor ballet en film. Hij overleed in 2002.
