Donald Byrd

Trompettist Donald Byrd uit Detroit kwam in 1955 naar New York en volgde in de Jazz Messengers van Art Blakey Clifford Brown op, wiens spel zijn voorbeeld was. Hij speelde op veel hard bop-platen van Blue Note. Op A New Perspective (1963) gebruikte hij een gospelkoor. Byrd studeerde ook aan universiteiten en gaf les in jazzgeschiedenis. In de jaren zeventig werkte hij met producers Larry en Fonce Mizell aan soul- en funkplaten als Black Byrd (1973), het best verkochte album van Blue Note tot dan toe. Puristen vonden dat verraad; hiphopproducers samplden zijn muziek later veel. In 1993 speelde hij mee op Jazzmatazz van Guru.
