Boston Pops Orchestra · De Boston Pops is een Amerikaans orkest uit Boston dat zich op lichte klassieke en populaire muziek richt. Het werd in 1885 opgericht als zijtak van het Boston Symphony Orchestra en bestaat vooral uit musici van dat orkest, al zijn meestal niet alle eerste stoelen erbij. Oprichter Henry Lee Higginson wilde in Boston concerten van een lichtere soort muziek bieden. Het eerste concert was op 11 juli 1885 onder Adolf Neuendorff. Tot 1900 heetten de optredens Promenade Concerts.

Muziek en doorbraak

Voor 1930 had het orkest zeventien dirigenten. In dat jaar begon Arthur Fiedler een bewind van vijftig jaar, als eerste Amerikaans geboren dirigent. Hij vond het jammer dat klassieke muziek vooral voor rijke concertgangers leek en bracht haar naar een breder publiek, onder meer met gratis concerten in de Hatch Shell langs de Charles River. Hij liet het orkest zowel populaire muziek als bekende klassiekers spelen en schiep zo een nieuwe niche voor populaire symfonische muziek. De bekendste stukken voor het orkest waren de kleurrijke noviteiten van Fiedlers vriend Leroy Anderson, zoals Sleigh Ride, The Typewriter en The Syncopated Clock. Ook begon Fiedler de jaarlijkse Holiday Pops in december. In juli 1935 maakte het orkest zijn eerste opnamen voor RCA Victor, met de eerste complete opname van Rhapsody in Blue van George Gershwin.

Invloed

Tegenwoordig geeft het orkest in het voorjaar een seizoen met populaire muziek en in december een kerstprogramma, onder leiding van Keith Lockhart. Elk jaar op 4 juli speelt het in de Hatch Shell, met de 1812 Overture van Tsjaikovski en The Stars and Stripes Forever van Sousa. De Boston Pops lieten horen dat een symfonieorkest ook een publiek kan bereiken dat naar popmuziek luistert.
