Arthur Bliss

Sir Arthur Bliss werd in 1891 geboren in Barnes, toen nog in Surrey, als oudste van drie zonen van een zakenman uit Massachusetts. Zijn moeder stierf toen hij vier was en zijn vader gaf hem liefde voor de kunsten mee. Hij studeerde klassieke talen en muziek in Cambridge en daarna een jaar aan het Royal College of Music, waar Ralph Vaughan Williams en Gustav Holst hem meer inspireerden dan zijn leraar Charles Stanford. Zijn opleiding werd afgebroken door de Eerste Wereldoorlog, waarin hij met onderscheiding diende.

Muziek en doorbraak

Na de oorlog stond hij bekend als een eigenzinnige, modernistische componist. Tot zijn werk horen A Colour Symphony, het cellokoncert, de balletten Checkmate en Miracle in the Gorbals en het klarinetkwintet. Voor de film Things to Come uit 1936 schreef hij de muziek, waaronder een mars. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog keerde hij uit de Verenigde Staten terug naar Engeland om voor de BBC te werken, waar hij directeur muziek werd. Na de oorlog werd hij Master of the Queen's Music. Hij overleed in 1975.

Invloed

In zijn latere jaren werd zijn muziek gewaardeerd maar ook ouderwets gevonden, en ze verdween in de schaduw van jongere collega's als William Walton en Benjamin Britten. Na zijn dood zijn veel opnamen verschenen en een deel van zijn werk is blijven klinken in het Britse repertoire. Bliss laat horen hoe een componist uit de klassieke traditie ook voor de bioscoop schreef, met een stevig, ritmisch orkestgeluid.
