Fly

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fly · Yoko Ono made this double album in 1971 together with John Lennon, around the same time as his album Imagine. It was her second album, shortly after the debut Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band. She divided the four sides into two kinds of music: songs to dance to, and music to listen to. Lennon brought in musicians such as Jim Keltner and Klaus Voormann.

Mind Train lasts almost seventeen minutes, a conversation between her voice and Lennon's guitar. Mrs. Lennon is the most conventional song, a ballad with Lennon on piano. On side three, Ono plays with self-playing sound machines by the Fluxus musician Joe Jones. The title track takes up almost an entire side: her voice was recorded first, then Lennon added guitar, some of it played backwards. The sleeve was a complete avant-garde package, with a poster and a card for ordering her book Grapefruit. In the American chart the album reached number 199.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Mrs. Lennon and notice how ordinary this song sounds: a simple ballad with piano, in contrast to the long experimental pieces on the rest of the album.
