Relayer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Relayer was made after keyboard player Rick Wakeman had left Yes, because he did not like the direction of Tales From Topographic Oceans. The band rehearsed as a quartet and recorded in the studio that bassist Chris Squire had at his home in Virginia Water. After auditions with Vangelis, among others, the choice fell on the Swiss Patrick Moraz, and this is the only studio record on which he plays. The production was in the hands of the band and Eddy Offord.

The sound is fiercer, with influences from jazz fusion and funk. The record has three tracks: The Gates of Delirium, inspired by Tolstoy's War and Peace, with a battle that ends in a soft prayer, and Sound Chaser and To Be Over. The album reached number four in England.
