Solid State Survivor

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Solid State Survivor · For the Japanese group's second album, music from earlier work came together. Behind the Mask had already been made in 1978 for a Seiko commercial, with synthesizers for the melody and digital gated reverb on the snare drum. Later covers came from Michael Jackson and Eric Clapton, among others.

The 1979 album is regarded as an early example of synth-pop and contributed to the development of techno. Technopolis, a tribute to Tokyo as an electronic centre, already used the term techno in its title. Rydeen later received a chiptune arrangement for an arcade game. The title track is new wave-style synth rock, and there is also an adaptation of the Beatles' Day Tripper. It was the group's most successful album in Japan. It won the Best Album Award at the Japan Record Awards and sold two million copies.
