The Hustler

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Hustler is the second studio album by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe. It was released in 1968 on Fania Records and has seven tracks, from The Hustler itself to Havana, which at almost seven minutes is the longest. The record is the first to contain the song Qué Lío, which the source calls a bolero.

That song would later play an important role in Marc Anthony's album El Cantante and in the film of the same title. The sleeve also has a story. The image of Colón in front of a pool table refers to the 1961 film The Hustler with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason. The photograph was taken at Ridgewood Grove Billiards in Yonkers, the business of Jerry Masucci's father.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Qué Lío, which was given new life decades later by Marc Anthony, and notice its calm, bolero-like character.
