Make It Big · For their second album, Wham! were given more say over the production, and George Michael was also credited as a producer. Most of it was written and recorded in six weeks, from the beginning of July 1984, at Studio Miraval in the south of France. There Michael could escape the press. Most of the songs were recorded with a real rhythm section. Their first album Fantastic was a hit in England, but had made no impact in America.

Make It Big became a great success and reached number one in both America and England. All four singles reached the top three in both countries. The video for Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go showed the duo in shirts bearing the slogan Choose Life. The video for Freedom was recorded during a concert in China, because Wham! were the first Western pop act to tour there. Rolling Stone called the record an almost flawless pop album. AllMusic later spoke of an exuberant set of new wave pop and soul.
