Pinkerton
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Pinkerton · After the great success of the 1994 debut, Rivers Cuomo felt constrained by rock music. He dropped the plan for a rock opera and wrote most of the second album during his studies at Harvard. The band recorded the songs in 1995 and 1996 at Electric Lady Studios in New York and Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, without a producer, to get closer to Weezer's live sound.
The result sounds darker and rawer than the debut: screeching guitars, hard rhythms and vocals right at the front of the mix. The lyrics deal with loneliness, sexual frustration and doubt about the rock life. Tired of Sex opens, El Scorcho is about Cuomo's shyness towards a woman, and The Good Life about his isolation at Harvard. The title comes from a character in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. The reviews were mixed and sales disappointed, but appreciation grew later and several emo bands named the album as an influence.
