Saint Dominic’s Preview
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Saint Dominic’s Preview · Saint Dominic's Preview came about between late 1971 and the spring of 1972 in studios in San Francisco, with Ted Templeman as co-producer. Van Morrison's band constantly changed its line-up, and some of the musicians were new. Listen to the Lion was a leftover from the sessions for Tupelo Honey. Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile) came from a single take: the band had little time to rehearse and the first take was used.
The album brings together Celtic folk, rhythm and blues, blues, jazz and singer-songwriter work. Jackie Wilson Said and the title track mix soul and folk. Listen to the Lion and Almost Independence Day are long songs with intense, almost raw vocals, comparable to Astral Weeks. Rolling Stone called it his best-produced and most ambitious record up to that point. It reached number 15 on the Billboard 200. Unlike with his two previous albums, the singer himself spoke well of it.
