His Band and the Street Choir

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

His Band and the Street Choir · Van Morrison released this fourth album in November 1970 on Warner Bros. It was first called Virgo's Fool, but the label gave it another title without his consent. The recording began early in 1970 with a demo session in a small church in Woodstock. He then worked at A&R Studios in New York. He wanted to record the album a cappella, with just a vocal group that he called the Street Choir. In the end a band played too, and he was later dissatisfied with it.

Reviewers praised the free, relaxed sound, but found the lyrics simpler than on earlier work. The record reached number 32 on the Billboard 200. The success came mainly from Domino, which reached the American top ten. Blue Money and Call Me Up in Dreamland made the Billboard Hot 100.

Listening tip. Listen to Domino and notice how vocals and band together carry the greatest success of his solo career.
