Diver Down

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Diver Down was released on 19 April 1982 on Warner Bros. At the beginning of 1982 the band had recorded (Oh) Pretty Woman as a stand-alone single, and when it became a hit, the record company quickly demanded an album. The band recorded it in twelve days with producer Ted Templeman. As a result there are five covers and many detours: jazz, country blues, doo-wop, a cappella and neoclassical. Dancing in the Street by Martha and the Vandellas also became a hit.

Cathedral is an instrumental piece in which Eddie Van Halen uses an echo effect to create a guitar sound that reminded the band of a church organ. Little Guitars was inspired by the flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya. The album sold well, but critics at the time were less enthusiastic than they had been about its predecessor Fair Warning.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cathedral and notice how the echo effect makes the guitar sound like a church organ and lets the notes flow on.
