War
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
War · This third album by the Irish band was recorded from September to November 1982 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, with producer Steve Lillywhite. It was released on 28 February 1983. Where the first records were about youth and faith, this one was about war and its consequences. The sound is harder than before, partly because guitarist the Edge used far less echo. Drummer Larry Mullen used a click track for the first time.
Sunday Bloody Sunday opens the album with a military-sounding drum part and a guitar solo that resembles machine-gun fire. The lyrics are about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. New Year's Day took shape under the influence of the Polish movement Solidarność. The record was a great success and reached number one in England, ahead of Michael Jackson's Thriller. It is regarded as U2's first openly political album.
