Pre-Millennium Tension

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

With Pre-Millennium Tension, Tricky wanted to get away from the label trip hop that critics had stuck on his debut Maxinquaye. He said he wanted to make a real punk record, fast and hard, although that did not turn out that way everywhere. The album was released on 11 November 1996 on Island. It was largely recorded at Grove Studios in Ocho Rios in Jamaica and partly in New York, and Ian Caple recorded, mixed and programmed it. According to one reviewer, the move to New York and the work with underground rappers produced a darker sound, with the singles Christiansands, Tricky Kid and Makes Me Wanna Die.

Critics heard ambitious, eclectic and menacing music with influences from ambient, drum and bass, hip hop and dancehall. In 1996 the album placed ninth in the Pazz & Jop poll, and it later made Q magazine's list of the heaviest albums.
