In 1957 the pianist Tommy Flanagan toured Europe as a member of trombonist J.J. Johnson's band. In Stockholm he was given the chance, for the first time, to lead a recording session himself. From Johnson's group he chose bassist Wilbur Little and drummer Elvin Jones. On 15 August the three recorded at Metronome Studio in Stockholm the music that was later released as Overseas. It was his debut as a bandleader.
Six of the nine pieces were written by Flanagan himself. In addition, the trio played Charlie Parker's Relaxin' At Camarillo, Billy Strayhorn's Chelsea Bridge and Willow Weep for Me. Flanagan re-recorded five of these pieces in 1996 for Sea Changes, his last studio album as a leader. The album was released on Prestige Records. The Penguin Guide to Jazz praised his touch and his clear melodic ideas. The label DIW later released all the tracks from the session on The Complete Overseas.
