CrazySexyCool

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

CrazySexyCool · After their 1992 debut, the three women began work on a follow-up in 1993, but the recording went slowly because of personal problems. Lisa Left Eye Lopes in particular was struggling, and because she was undergoing treatment at a clinic she could contribute very little. The sessions lasted until September 1994 and took place in studios in Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York, among other places. The group again worked with Dallas Austin, Babyface and Jermaine Dupri, and with newer makers such as Organized Noize and Chucky Thompson. Sean Combs helped with the hip-hop soul.

The record mixes hip-hop beats, funk, deep grooves and smooth production. The lyrics deal with sexuality, romance and youthful optimism, and the record is regarded as a coming-of-age story. Waterfalls touches on violence surrounding the drug trade and on the HIV and AIDS epidemic, and Cee-Lo Green sang backing vocals. CrazySexyCool was well received and is the best-selling album by an American girl group.
