Meet the Temptations

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Meet the Temptations from 1964 was the group's first album on Gordy, Motown's label. It is not a session but a collection of singles and B-sides, including The Way You Do the Things You Do, the first hit. Only on that track does David Ruffin sing, who had been with the group for just three months. On the other tracks you hear Al Bryant, who had been fired in December 1963.

Most of the songs come from the slow early period, in which Motown staff spoke of the hitless Temptations. Paul Williams sings most of the lead parts, and Eddie Kendricks has a few. Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams also get room for lead lines, ad libs and harmony singing. The record was first released only in mono; a stereo mix followed in 1966.

Listening tip. Listen to Aiming At Your Heart and notice how the lead singer is surrounded by the harmony singing of the rest of the group.
