We Remember Sam Cooke

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

We Remember Sam Cooke · In April 1965 Motown released this album as a tribute to Sam Cooke, who had died in December of the previous year. It is the fifth studio album by The Supremes and consists entirely of songs by Cooke. Harvey Fuqua, Hal Davis and Marc Gordon produced it.

Diana Ross sings the lead parts, except on (Ain't That) Good News, where Florence Ballard takes the lead and Ross sings backing vocals. The group tackle well-known songs such as You Send Me, Chain Gang, Bring It On Home to Me and A Change Is Gonna Come. The album belongs to a series of themed albums that Motown made in those years. It was the second most successful of that series and reached fifth place on the Billboard R&B chart.
