Sam’s Town
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sam’s Town · Sam's Town is the second studio album by The Killers, released on 27 September 2006 by Island Records. The title comes from Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall in Las Vegas, the band's home town. Singer Brandon Flowers wanted to make a record that showed what had shaped him. Influences cited include U2, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. On the debut he had used Auto-Tune; this time he deliberately did not, so that his voice could be heard for real for the first time.
Critics were divided. The Observer gave it five stars and heard similarities with Springsteen's Born to Run, while Rolling Stone rejected the attempt to sound weighty in the manner of Springsteen. Over the years appreciation grew. Readers of Rolling Stone named it the most underrated album of the decade in 2009, and Q counted it among the best albums of the century. When You Were Young became the big single.
