Reach Out

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Reach Out was released in July 1967 and was the Four Tops' fifth studio album. It became their best-selling studio album and at the same time their last with the songwriting team Holland, Dozier and Holland. Six of their most successful singles are on it, including Reach Out I'll Be There, which reached number 1 in the United States and the United Kingdom, and Standing in the Shadows of Love, Bernadette and 7-Rooms of Gloom.

Besides their own hits there are covers of pop hits chosen by Berry Gordy, such as Tim Hardin's If I Were a Carpenter and the Left Banke's Walk Away Renée. These include two songs by the Monkees. Levi Stubbs sings the lead parts, the Funk Brothers play the accompaniment. BBC Music called the album a high point of Motown's first decade. In 2020 Rolling Stone put it at number 429 on its list of the 500 greatest albums ever.
