Songs Our Daddy Taught Us
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Songs Our Daddy Taught Us · This second studio album by the Everly Brothers was released in 1958 on Cadence Records and consists of songs that the brothers had learned as boys from their father, Ike Everly. It is traditional music, released at the peak of their commercial success as a rock 'n' roll duo. Don and Phil play guitar and sing, Floyd Chance plays double bass. The accompaniment therefore stays extremely sparse.
That made the album unexpected. The music journalist Richie Unterberger called it ahead of its time, and The New Rolling Stone Album Guide wrote that even Elvis Presley would not have had the courage to make such a roots record. In January 1959 the album entered Cashbox's Best-Selling Pop Albums and reached number seventeen in three weeks. In 2013 Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and the singer Norah Jones made a version of their own under the title Foreverly.
