Three Imaginary Boys

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Three Imaginary Boys is The Cure's debut album, released on 8 May 1979 on Fiction Records. The producer was Chris Parry. The record company chose the songs, the running order and the sleeve without Robert Smith's permission. Since that album he has kept full creative control over every record. Smith himself was never satisfied. He found it quickly made and flat, and sometimes wrote lyrics while he was singing them. The album reached number 44 on the UK chart. In other countries it was later released under the title Boys Don't Cry with a different track list.

When it came out the reactions were good. Sounds gave it five stars and called Grinding Halt a pop song reminiscent of the Isley Brothers or the Buzzcocks. Later critics heard sharp post-punk and idiosyncratic pop, with an undertone of restrained melancholy. On Foxy Lady, a soundcheck, bassist Michael Dempsey sings.

Listening tip. Listen to Foxy Lady and notice the singer: this is not Robert Smith but bassist Michael Dempsey. Can you hear how the recording sounds like a soundcheck?
