Pornography

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pornography was released on 3 May 1982, as the band's fourth album. It was the first record with producer Phil Thornalley and was recorded from January to April at RAK Studios. The sessions were marked by a lot of drugs and quarrelling, and singer Robert Smith was deep in a depression. He thought it would be the group's last record. The album closed the dark period that had begun with Seventeen Seconds.

The music sounds dense, pounding and heavy. The NME reviewer called it Phil Spector in Hell. The Hanging Garden was the only song to be released as a single. Critics were not very enthusiastic when it came out, although the record entered at number eight in England. After that bassist Simon Gallup left the band and the group chose a lighter sound. Later Pornography received a lot of praise and is regarded as a landmark of gothic rock.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Hanging Garden, the only song on the album released as a single. Notice how dense and pounding the band sounds and how the vocals keep rising above it.
