Turn! Turn! Turn!
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
After the success of their debut album and the hit Mr. Tambourine Man, the Byrds went into Columbia Studios in Hollywood on 28 June 1965 to record a follow-up. A version of Bob Dylan's It's All Over Now, Baby Blue was rejected, and in the end the group chose Turn! Turn! Turn!, Pete Seeger's adaptation of text from the Book of Ecclesiastes. The song took them back to number one on the American Hot 100.
The album sounds like its predecessor: folk rock with multi-part harmony singing and Jim McGuinn's clear twelve-string Rickenbacker. Besides Dylan covers such as The Times They Are a-Changin' and Lay Down Your Weary Tune, Gene Clark still wrote the most original material, but McGuinn wrote more and David Crosby received his first writing credit. The atmosphere was tense. Afterwards producer Terry Melcher had to leave, and in early 1966 Clark left the group.
