Detroit-New York Junction

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Detroit-New York Junction · This record was recorded on 13 March 1956 and released on Blue Note. The session was one of the first for pianist Tommy Flanagan after he had moved to New York. A day earlier he had played with the same rhythm section on a recording by guitarist Kenny Burrell. Besides the trumpeter Thad Jones we hear tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell, Burrell, bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Shadow Wilson.

Little Girl Blue is an exception, because only Jones, Burrell and Pettiford play on it. The rest of the record is a full line-up with piano, saxophone and drums. A later AllMusic reviewer called it an excellent set of driving hard bop, the solid, constantly moving jazz style of those years.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Little Girl Blue and notice the small line-up without piano and drums. Note how this gives the trumpet more room.
