Remain in Light

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Remain in Light · After Fear of Music, Talking Heads and producer Brian Eno wanted to show that the band was more than a backing group for singer David Byrne. In 1980 they went to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. There they played long instrumental jams, with the Nigerian musician Fela Kuti as a model. African polyrhythms and funk were mixed with electronics, and the instrumental tracks consisted of repeating loops. Guest musicians included guitarist Adrian Belew and singer Nona Hendryx. Byrne suffered from writer's block and wrote his lyrics as a stream of thoughts.

The album was released on 8 October 1980. Critics praised the experiments, the new rhythms and the way such different styles became a whole. Once in a Lifetime and Houses in Motion were released as singles. The record is often regarded as the band's high point and has been in the American National Recording Registry since 2017.
