Take That & Party

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Take That & Party · In 1989 manager Nigel Martin-Smith built a boy band around the young singer and songwriter Gary Barlow, modelled on New Kids on the Block. The first single, Do What U Like, reached only number 82, but it brought the group to the attention of RCA. Promises and Once You've Tasted Love did not do well either. Only their cover of It Only Takes a Minute reached number 7 in the UK chart. I Found Heaven, A Million Love Songs and a cover of Could It Be Magic, with Robbie Williams on lead vocals, followed.

The debut album was released in August 1992 and reached number two in the UK album chart. It stayed in the top 75 for almost a year and a half and won Best Album at the Smash Hits Awards. The sound alternates between dance-oriented pop songs, covers and ballads.
