The Madcap Laughs
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Madcap Laughs · Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd in April 1968, after his behaviour had become increasingly erratic. Recording for his first solo record began in May 1968 under Peter Jenner at EMI Studios, but went badly. Barrett suddenly stopped and ended up in psychiatric care. In early 1969 he took up his music again, and Malcolm Jones of the label Harvest took over the production.
The bulk of the record was made between April and July 1969. In total five producers were credited, including Barrett himself and his former bandmates David Gilmour and Roger Waters. Among the guest musicians were members of Soft Machine. The album was released in January 1970 on Harvest and reached position 40 on the British chart. In the United States it followed only in 1974.
