Nine Objects of Desire
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Nine Objects of Desire was released on 10 September 1996 on A&M Records and is Suzanne Vega's fifth album. Mitchell Froom, then her husband, produced it, as he did its predecessor 99.9F°. The recording took place at The Magic Shop in New York. The music features experimental instrumentation and arrangements, with influences from jazz, bossa nova and alternative rock. The lyrics are more personal than before, with fewer characters and more of her own life.
Birth-Day (Love Made Real) is about the birth of her daughter Ruby. Caramel is strongly influenced by bossa nova and by the music of Astrud Gilberto and was given a feeling of Antônio Carlos Jobim. She calls it one of her proudest songs. Reviews were positive, although the album sold less than earlier records. No Cheap Thrill became a hit in the United Kingdom.
