Tribute to Uncle Ray

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tribute to Uncle Ray is the second studio album by Little Stevie Wonder and was released by Motown in October 1962, shortly after The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie. Yet it was the first to be recorded, when he was eleven. Berry Gordy and Motown wanted to link the young singer with Ray Charles, who, like him, was blind and African American.

The songs are almost all by Ray Charles, such as Hallelujah I Love Her So, Come Back Baby and Drown in My Own Tears. In addition there are songs by others, such as (I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over, and Sunset, which he wrote with Clarence Paul under the name Stevie Judkins. Like his debut, the album produced no hits. Motown was still searching for a sound that suited the twelve-year-old singer.
