Stevie at the Beach

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stevie at the Beach was released on 23 June 1964 on Motown's Tamla label. It is Stevie Wonder's fourth studio album. The album is a kind of concept album built around beach music and surf songs. The label wanted to have him sing surf numbers as well. Motown had earlier tried to turn him into a teenage version of Ray Charles, and for one album a lounge singer.

Wonder sings and plays harmonica, drums and keyboards, and various session musicians from Los Angeles play along. The record includes Castles in the Sand, Ebb Tide, Beach Stomp and Beyond the Sea. Only Hey Harmonica Man was a modest hit. The rest did not catch on with the public. Only in 1965 did Wonder have a hit again, when he was allowed to show more of his musical talent.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the harmonica in Hey Harmonica Man, an instrument that Wonder plays himself on this album.
