Jammed Together
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In May 1969 Stax released twenty-seven albums at once, to celebrate its tenth anniversary and a new distribution deal. Jammed Together was one of them. It brings together the label's three best-known guitarists: bluesman Albert King, gospel singer Pops Staples and Steve Cropper of Booker T. and the M.G.'s. It looks like a jam session, but according to Cropper they were never in the studio together. Stax boss Al Bell had them record their parts separately, because they were all busy.
The music is largely instrumental and mixes blues, soul and gospel with a hefty rock beat. Each guitarist sings one song. King takes the lead with his bent notes, Cropper plays more quietly, and Staples provides gospel-style tremolo. There are covers such as What'd I Say and Baby, What You Want Me to Do. Critics later called it filler for the guitar market, but some especially praised Opus de Soul.
