Getz / Gilberto · By 1962 Stan Getz had already made two bossa nova records, including Jazz Samba, and producer Creed Taylor wanted him to collaborate with the creators of the genre. So in March 1963, at A & R Recording Studios in New York, in two days, a record was made with the Brazilian singer and guitarist João Gilberto and the pianist and composer Antônio Carlos Jobim. Phil Ramone was the engineer and Verve released the album in March 1964. The rhythm section consisted of Jobim, bassist Sebastião Neto and drummer Milton Banana.
On two songs, Garota de Ipanema and Corcovado, Astrud Gilberto sings. The Girl from Ipanema won a Grammy for Record of the Year and launched her career. Critics praised the bossa nova groove and the minimalism of the record. The album also won the Grammy for Album of the Year, as the first non-American record ever, and is seen as the record that made bossa nova popular worldwide.
