Superunknown
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Superunknown · After the tour for Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden began work on a new album in 1993. After two records with Terry Date, the band wanted a different producer and chose Michael Beinhorn. The recording ran from July to September at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle. Each track was recorded separately, with drums and bass first, and the band experimented at length with guitar and drum sounds. Brendan O'Brien mixed the result. There are fifteen tracks on it, because nobody wanted to argue over what had to go.
The album keeps the heaviness of earlier records, but is more varied. There are influences of psychedelia and pop, and Half has an Eastern-tinged atmosphere. Fell on Black Days is in 6/4 time and Limo Wreck in 15/8. Black Hole Sun and Head Down show Beatles influence. Spoonman and Black Hole Sun won a Grammy. The record was the band's breakthrough and is regarded as a grunge classic.
